The Ring of Fire Kiln® is a metal container for converting waste wood and brush into biochar, a valuable soil amendment.
The kiln consists of an inner ring composed of six sheets of mild steel that are bolted together. An outer ring of lighter gauge steel bolts onto the brackets that hold the inner ring together. The purpose of the outer ring is to serve as a heat shield that holds in heat for better efficiency. Total volume of the kiln is 5.6 cubic yards.

The Ring of Fire Kiln is a state-of-the-art metal container designed for converting waste wood and brush into biochar efficiently. Its construction includes an inner ring for the pyrolysis process and an outer heat shield for safety and efficiency, enabling fast, clean, and safer biochar production compared to open burn piles.
The Ring of Fire kiln is used by a diverse group of individuals and organizations committed to wildfire fuel load reductions and forest restoration. This includes small woodland owners, forestry contractors, and environmental groups. These users leverage the kiln for its efficient biochar production capabilities, mobility, contributing to forest restoration efforts, soil enhancement, and carbon storage projects. Farms with woody debris also use the Ring of Fire to produce biochar for composting and soil improvement.
The kiln has a 7.6 feet (2.3 m) diameter, stands 40 inches tall (1 m), weighs 335 pounds (150 kg) fully assembled, and has a total volume of 5.6 cubic yards (4.2 m3). It’s designed for easy field assembly by two people in about 15 minutes and can produce 2-3 cubic yards (1.5 – 2.3 m3) of biochar in 4-5 hours.
The kiln is designed for quick and secure assembly in the field, requiring no heavy machinery and can be assembled by hand crews in approximately 15 minutes. Its operation involves a straightforward process of loading biomass, lighting, and tending to the kiln, with a burn time that allows for efficient biochar production.
By converting biomass to biochar with 10-20% efficiency and significantly reducing smoke emissions, the Ring of Fire kiln helps store carbon in the soil, restore forests, and reduce the impact of smoke on air quality. Its design pulls smoke back into the kiln for a cleaner burn.
Yes, users of the Ring of Fire kiln can realize financial benefits through the production of biochar, which can be sold as a soil amendment, used in agricultural practices to enhance crop yields, or applied in environmental remediation projects. The efficiency and low operational costs of the kiln also make it a cost-effective solution for biochar production.
